2022 Norwegian National cancelled

Friday 14 January, 2022

The Norwegian National Brass Band Championship has been cancelled for a second successive year, as the country continues to face restrictions in an attempt to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following a government update on Thursday, January 13, the Norwegian Music Federation held a meeting with representatives from Norway’s elite bands, where it was decided that the best way to proceed was to cancel the prestigious event. An email was sent to all competing bands late on Thursday.

It is understood the potential for positive COVID cases preventing bands from being able to take part was among bands’ main concerns.

The Norwegian National Championship had been due to take place in the Grieg Hall, Bergen, on February 11 and 12, welcoming bands across the Divisions for an intense two days of music making. Following a period of very few restrictions, the rise of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has led to a re-introduction of tough measures in Norway, including restrictions on the number of people permitted to gather, posing considerable challenges when attempting to organise rehearsals and performances.

While the option to postpone the event was considered, a statement released on the NMF website on January 14 explained that the organisation had listened to all member bands and that this was not an avenue they were keen to pursue.
