New faces at Strata Brass

Wednesday 24 November, 2021

A recent concert from Strata Brass featured some fresh faces sitting in the band’s line-up.

Already well-known to followers of the band is cornet player Rhys Stokes, who joined the band on third cornet back in 2019 and having impressed the band with his hard work, recently moved up to the solo cornet bench, making his first official appearances there in the concert as well as the recent Bolsover and Wychavon contests.

During recent months, a trio of youngsters have boosted the band, as well as pulling down the average age. Joining on second cornet is Jacob Waller, who came up through the ranks of the Barnsley Music Service ensembles, playing cornet in Barnsley Junior and Intermediate Bands before joining the senior ensembles Barnsley Metropolitan Band and Barnsley Town Concert Band.

Jacob also plays in the trumpet line for funk band Civic Fusion and his school awarded him Musician of the Year in 2017.

Completing the band’s middle row is Davey Webster. Davey is another graduate of the Barnsley Music Service and also joins from Barnsley Metropolitan. Tutored by Michael Dodd, Davey is a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and passed his grade eight euphonium with distinction in 2020.

Taking the crown of youngest player in the band from her older brother Rhys, Skye Stokes joins her dad Nick in the trombone section. Another product of Barnsley Music Service, Skye plays trombone with Barnsley Town Concert Band, Civic Fusion and the Sheffield Senior Schools Orchestra. She is also an accomplished baritone player, playing first baritone for Foden’s and Elland Youth Bands, as well as being appointed principal baritone of the National Children’s Band of Great Britain in 2020 and 2021.
