York RI to showcase Richard Marshall

Tuesday 23 November, 2021

York RI Band will feature the world class cornet player Richard Marshall at a concert to be held at York St John’s University on Friday, November 26.

The concert is supported by the Geneva Group and will showcase the principal cornet player of the Black Dyke Band, described by Elgar Howarth as “the most outstanding cornet player this country has ever produced.”

Previously principal cornet for ten years with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Richard fulfilled his childhood ambition and followed in the footsteps of some of his cornet heroes and moved to the Queensbury band in January 2006.

Looking forward to the concert, Richard Marshall said: “This will be my first solo gig since February 2020, when I was in Taiwan. York is a lot closer, so come along and listen to me play Martin Ellerby’s Cornet Concerto, the beautiful Don’t Doubt Him Now and the finish with a loud super F in Kenny Baker's Virtuosity.”

As a respected and devoted teacher, Richard is a cornet tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

He is a regular tutor at the International Brass Band Summer School, the National Children’s Brass Band and the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band.
