Welsh youth delight at reunion

Sunday 12 September, 2021

Youngsters from the National Youth Brass Band of Wales (NYBBW) have reacted with joy and delight after coming together for the first time in around two years.

Like people far and wide, members of the NYBBW were unable to meet due to COVID-related restrictions, with the 2020 and 2021 courses cancelled as a result. However, the band participated in a variety of digital activities, including an online series called The Musician’s Toolkit, led by musical director, Philip Harper.

An in-person reunion came recently, when the band meet under Philip’s baton for a day of rehearsals in St David's Hall, Cardiff.

Reflecting on the day, Philip told British Bandsman: “We met for an informal but hard-working day of blowing through some things. For some of the youngsters, they hadn't had a chance to play with a band post-pandemic, so it was a great opportunity just to enjoy live music-making again.

“The band cancelled its courses in 2020 and 2021 but we hope to be back together finally in 2022, and the recent day was just an exercise in staying in touch with each other, socially and musically, which is crucial and bodes well for the months ahead.”
