Westminster welcome for Friary

Sunday 5 September, 2021

The sound of music rang out in College Garden, Westminster Abbey, recently as Friary Brass Band made a return to the tranquil setting as part of the abbey’s programme of lunchtime concerts.

Performing to an enthusiastic audience, the event was Friary’s first engagement since February 2020 and saw it conducted by musical director, Chris King.

Friary featured several soloists throughout the programme including the world premiere of Callum Au’s new arrangement of What a Wonderful World, delivered by principal cornetist, Richard Straker.

Reflecting on the concert, Friary Band chairman Nigel Stevens commented: “We can’t deny being slightly apprehensive before the concert, bearing in mind the length of time since our last public engagement, but we were delighted with the way it went, and the audience certainly appreciated having us back in this beautiful setting, overlooked by Westminster Abbey and the Palace of Westminster.”
