New flugelhorn at Fairey

Wednesday 1 September, 2021

The Fairey Band has announced the appointment of Nicóla Shaw to the flugelhorn chair.

Nicóla’s appointment is the latest boost for the Stockport band, which is building an intriguing mix of youth and experience as it plans for the weeks and months ahead.

Prior to joining Fairey, Nicóla spent eight years at Wingates Band across a variety of seats, including a lengthy spell as the band’s flugelhorn player. Highlights included being chosen as the featured soloist at the recent Best of Brass Festival in Halifax in July, and performing in The Royal Albert Hall London, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and Sage Gateshead. In May, Nicóla won both the open slow melody and air varie categories of the South West Brass Band Association online solo contest.

Reflecting on her tenure with Wingates, Nicóla told British Bandsman: “I’m extremely grateful for my years at Wingates and would like to take the time to thank them. I’m excited for my next chapter as flugel with Faireys. Having been present with the band over the past few months, there is such a positive atmosphere. It looks to be an exciting time for the band and I feel so privileged to have been asked to be part of it, especially as a soloist.”

Nicóla joins an impressive mix of youth and experience at the Stockport band, which has been busy planning for the weeks and months ahead under conductor, Adam Cooke, who commented: “Nicóla has earned a growing reputation as a top class flugel player and it was immediately clear that she was the perfect choice to join the band’s line up of soloists. I’m looking forward to being able to introduce Nicóla to our audiences at upcoming concerts in September and beyond.”
