Foden's celebrates solo success

Monday 16 November, 2020

Members of Foden’s Band have offered praise for all those involved in the organisation's recent solo competition after reflecting on the success of the online event.

The final of the competition attracted more than 4,500 views across the globe, including viewers from China and Australia. The various rounds of the contest welcomed around 150,000 views as people watched eagerly to hear the 84 submissions.

Reflecting on the event, Foden’s Band principal cornet player Mark Wilkinson said: “The standard across the heats and final was fantastic and we would like to thank those who submitted entries as well as those who posted feedback on the various performances.

“We are grateful to the band’s principal players and Michael Fowles, who acted as adjudicators in the heats and who were joined in the final by our esteemed guests, Bramwell Tovey, Russell Gray, David Childs and Simone Rebello.”

Mark continued: “The event would not have happened without help from Kapitol Promotions and Brass Band World, Arts Council England (which provided funding through its Emergency Response Fund) and Iwan Fox, who hosted the final. Finally, we would like to say a special thank-you to our social media committee and Darren Lea for co ordinating this project.”

Undeterred by the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing restrictions, Foden’s Band has remained active, with many activities moving online. On top of the solo contest, the band has produced 16 virtual banding videos, five podcasts and hosted the online Whit Friday contest.

The solo contest stream and all videos produced during lock down can be viewed on Foden’s Band’s YouTube channel.
