Wednesday 14 October, 2020

A star-studded line-up is preparing to inspire brass players of all levels of ability and experience, courtesy of an event being organised by Astley Youth Band.

The online brass day is to take place on October 24 and will see a range of renowned professional musicians deliver sessions for those from beginner to advanced, including children and adults. There will also be a session for parents, with hints and tips on supporting their youngsters. There is no cost to participating in the event.

Among those leading sessions will be Ewan Easton MBE, principal tuba with the Hallé Orchestra, who will lead Spin the Plates sessions exploring the different elements of brass playing and offering helpful tips on how to improve. Ewan will also be delivering a session for all musicians and parents of musicians, discussing strategies for staying motivated.

Glyn Williams, principal euphonium with Cory Band and wife Helen, renowned flugelhorn player, will be sharing some of their experiences of playing for the world’s number one ranked band. The session will be open to adult brass players.

Jon Stokes, a leading London freelance trombonist, will share his specialist knowledge of soul, funk and jazz, with lots of practical elements.

Arlene Macfarlane, a professional trombonist and a passionate music educator, (pictured above) will lead a session packed with all things musical for players under the age of 12, up to around grade three.

Meanwhile, AYB tutors Toby Hobson, Helen Minshall, Sam Raisbeck and Neil Raisbeck will offer a play-along session, with music sent out prior to the day. During the session everyone will be muted, with tracks to play along and enjoy.
