Curtain to rise on Cory online contest

Monday 7 September, 2020

With a few weeks to go, the schedule and judging line-up have been unveiled for the Cory Online Brass Band Championship, which will see bands from far and wide pit their musical wits against each other.

The event will take place on the evenings of Friday and Saturday, September 18-19 and 25-26, with 73 bands competing in an entertainment-style format. Bands will have up to 10 minutes each to try to wow the judges with their video performances.

Supported by Arts Council Wales, the contest will be broadcast live from Kapitol Promotions’ headquarters in Cardiff, available to watch for free via the Cory Band YouTube channel. It will include live judges, discussions and instant feedback from the panel after each performance. The event will be hosted by Philip Harper, musical director of the Cory Band and Morgan Jones, Cory Band president and Welsh Television presenter.

Speaking about the event, Philip Harper said: “We’re so excited to be hosting this online contest and whilst we’d obviously all like to be back competing again properly, we’re delighted to be able to offer bands something to focus on and keep them motivated during these strange times. We’re also extremely grateful to have secured sponsorship of each section from World of Brass, Besson, Wright & Round, Indoor Music Games and Thurrock Marching Brass, all of whom have generously contributed towards the numerous trophies that will be awarded across each section. We’d also like to say a big thank you to Philip Morris, Kapitol Promotions and Brass Band World for their support in providing premises for our live studio.”

He continued: “Cory Band members have been mentoring bands as part of the contest, and having seen some of the entries already submitted, I’m sure the public are in for a treat. Our plan is to make this as live an experience as we can whilst having some fun and providing a platform for bands across the world to showcase their talents.”
