New principal at Brighouse and Rastrick

Thursday 23 July, 2020

The Brighouse and Rastrick Band has announced the signing of Tom Smith as its new principal cornet player following the decision by Kyle Lawson to return home to New Zealand.

News of the arrival caps a whirlwind spell for Tom, who was only unveiled in the top seat at the Fairey Band in June – but has now firmly set his sights on success in Yorkshire with the West Riding band.

The appointment is the latest milestone in a flourishing musical career for the Royal Northern College of Music student, who is a student of Roger Webster and Richard Marshall. Tom is also a former member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain and the Camborne and Cornwall Youth brass bands.

Commenting on his appointment, Tom said: “I am thrilled to be joining the Brighouse and Rastrick Band, a band I have always admired. Since a young age, this position is one that I have always aspired to achieve. I am keen to get working with the band, to push myself to be the best I can be, and also eager to work with Professor David King.

“I am, however, saddened that this unmissable opportunity has come at the time it has as I was thoroughly looking forward to working with the Fairey Band, which I would like to thank for being so welcoming and giving me the opportunities it has. My best wishes go to the band and MD Adam Cooke.”

Previous principal cornet player Kyle Lawson, who returns to New Zealand in order to be closer to his family and the country’s Army Band, received praise for his tenure in the top seat.

Ste Cavanagh, chairman of Brighouse and Rastrick, added: “We’re thrilled Tom has accepted our invitation to join on principal cornet. It is an exciting opportunity to work with Tom, who we have been keen to work with for some time. We wish Kyle the very best for the future and look forward to starting the next chapter with Tom when circumstances allow.”

A Fairey Band spokesperson said the band would provide an update in due course.
