BrassPass Band of the Year Contest line-up announced

Thursday 7 March, 2019

Brasspass are delighted to announce the line-up for its inaugural Band of the Year Contest, to be held at The Stoller Hall, Manchester on 22 June 2019. The confirmed line up is as follows:

Black Dyke

Brighouse & Rastrick

Carlton Main Frickley

Cory

Fairey

Foden's

Flowers

Tredegar

Whitburn

The invitation was extended to the top ten ranked UK bands in the World Rankings as at 31st December 2018. The only band within this group to decline their invitation was Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

The contest format is a 30-minute own choice selection of music that must include a soloist item. The contest is not an 'entertainments' contest and the jury panel will be judging purely on the quality of music making. The panel, already confirmed, are a team of three highly skilled international judges, all of whom have a sterling reputation as adjudicators, conductors and musicians, and these will be announced before the contest day. Adjudication will be 'in the open' and the judges will rank each of the bands individually from 1-9, the lowest aggregate score winning the contest.

There will also be a soloist award, and again the judging panel will rank the soloist performances 1-9.

In the event of a tie for any placing, the higher placed soloist position of the respective bands will be the deciding factor on who takes the higher position.

Commenting on the new contest, BrassPass Managing Director, Martin Gernon was obviously delighted:

“We are thrilled to have attracted such an incredible line up for the first year of this contest and I wish to publicly thank the bands for their tremendous support. The music format makes the contest so intriguing and from an audience standpoint hearing the nine best UK bands on top form with a wide variety of music choices is mouthwatering.”

The event will be pre-drawn and the draw published before the end of March.

The day is rounded off with a spectacular Gala Concert with Black Dyke Band and a very special guest soloist, who will be announced in the next few days.

Tickets are available now from The Stoller Hall Box Office for both the Contest and the Gala Concert.
