Childs and Brighouse to star at BIC Gala Concert

Monday 4 March, 2019

Brighouse and Rastrick Band and euphonium virtuoso David Childs will take centre stage at this year’s Brass in Concert Festival, with the combination presenting an evening of ‘Classic Brass’ on the Saturday evening prior to the 43rd Brass in Concert Championship.

Events at Sage Gateshead on the weekend of 16-17 November, sponsored by Yamaha, Banks Group and British Bandsman, will kick off with a performance by the local young musicians of the Elementary Band from schools in the Bedlington and Ashington area. This will be followed by the Youth Brass in Concert Championship, which got off to such a fantastic start with its inaugural event in 2018. Taster Sessions and other education events will complement the youth contest, while Brighouse and Rastrick, conducted by David Thornton, and David Childs will provide the entertainment at the World of Brass in Concert event in the evening (7.30pm).

Commenting on the programme of events, Brass in Concert Chairman, John Woods, commented: “We are delighted that David Childs, to many the World’s finest euphonium player, will be appearing with Brighouse and Rastrick at this year’s Brass in Concert Festival. For the past two years we have gone slight ‘outside the box’ with our Saturday evening concert in presenting Cory with Only Men Aloud and Foden’s with Matt Ford. Both were very well received by the Sage Gateshead audience, but we also must keep in mind the fact that Brass in Concert ‘regulars’ also love to hear great brass band music on its own! This year’s programme will be specially selected to feature classic brass band music, but with such virtuosity on stage we can expect a few ‘gems’ in there too.”

John Woods continued: “We are in the final stages of securing the line-up for the Brass in Concert Championship and hope to announce this soon. We are very pleased to be able to present Youth Brass in Concert for the second time, building upon the inspiring performances by five young bands last year. Yet again it promises to be a memorable weekend, so please make sure you get the seat you want by booking early!”
