Evans and Hedley mark new era for International Staff Band

Thursday 24 January, 2019

The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army have announced that following the retirement of Derick Kane from the band, Jonathan Evans will take on the position of Principal Euphonium. He will be assisted by 20-year-old Andrew Hedley on 2nd Euphonium.

On 23 January, during his last official rehearsal, the band acknowledged the 42 years' service that Derick Kane has given to the ISB. It was also announced that as of Wednesday 30 January 2019, Jonathan Evans will become the band's new Principal Euphonium. Jonathan has been by Derick’s side since joining the band in 2000 and has supported him for over 18 years.

A spokesperson for the band said: "It would be fair to say that he, like many others have been patiently waiting for a possible opportunity to move to the principal seat, and after 42 years that opportunity has now become a reality for Jonathan. The band are thrilled with this appointment and wish Jonathan well in his new position within the ISB.
Jonathan brings to the table a wealth of playing experience and a technical ability you would struggle to beat!"

"I’m sure a lasting memory for the current band will be the way Jonathan stepped into Derick’s shoes at the last minute when he was unable to be part of the band's visit to Australia in 2015. During that memorable tour, Jonathan graciously took on the added responsibility and without what seemed like any hint of nerves got on with the job in hand.
Not only did he made the principal seat his own during that tour, he gave many outstanding solo performances during our time on Oz."

Jonathan Evans commented: “It's been a privilege to sit next to Derick for 18 years. Now I am looking forward to the challenge of the principal's chair and I would like to thank Bandmaster Stephen Cobb for the opportunity. I am also looking forward to welcoming Andrew Hedley into the band as we open a new chapter for the ISB euphonium section.”

Andrew Hedley is a fourth generation Salvationist, growing up in the Chester-le-Street Corps. He joined the Young People’s Band on tenor horn before moving onto euphonium. As well as regularly attending The Salvation Army’s Northern Summer School, Andrew served for four years as the Principal Euphonium of the Territorial Youth Band, where he now helps as a staff member. He has also been the Principal Euphonium of the Territorial Music School’s A Band for the last three years and guest Principal Euphonium of the German Staff Band on a number of occasions.

Andrew was invited to take part in the recording of Derick Kane’s recent solo CD, Forte, and considered it a great honour to play alongside Derick, given the big influence Derick continues to be on him.

Away from The Salvation Army, Andrew is enjoying a successful career in the wider brass band world, joining the Reg Vardy Band in 2014 and becoming Principal Euphonium in 2015. He is also a former member of National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

Andrew commented: “I’m very much looking forward to joining the ISB and am very grateful to Bandmaster Stephen Cobb for this opportunity, and for his ongoing support and encouragement”.
