Young Brass Award Finalists announced

Tuesday 22 January, 2019

British Bandsman is delighted to announce the four performers who have progressed to the final of the Young Brass Award. The semi-final, which took place on Sunday 13 January at Manchester’s Carol Nash Hall, next to the Stoller Hall, saw a strong field of eight highly talented performers. The Young Brass Award, which was formerly known as the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Musician of the Year, was this year taken over by BrassPass.tv.

The eight semi-finalists were selected by former BBC producer Terry Carter, who took on the task of organising the event, and Still Listening to the Band presenter Frank Renton. The two adjudicators for this stage of the competition were renowned cornet soloist and conductor Russell Gray, and Katy Jones, Principal Trombone of the Hallé Orchestra.

The four finalists are:
Holly Clark (Trumpet)
Angus Butt (Bass Trombone)
Peter McDonough (Euphonium)
Tobias Reifer (Euphonium)
John Stirzaker, who reviewed the event for British Bandsman, commented: “The overall standard of playing was amongst the highest ever seen at this contest. All the players demonstrated qualities that will allow them to go on further in what for all of them is already a full solo career.”

The final will be held at Stoller Hall on Sunday 31 March, with each of the soloists being accompanied by Foden’s Band. Ticket are available for the final from the Stoller Hall box office on 0333 130 0967 or at https://www.stollerhall.com

A comprehensive review of the semi-finals will be published in this week’s British Bandsman. It can also be viewed on BrassPass.tv.
