EBBA announces composers for 2018 European Championships

Monday 3 July, 2017

The European Brass Band Association (EBBA) has revealed the identity of the composers who will be writing the test-pieces for the 2018 European Brass Band Championships, to be held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, from 3-6 May.

Writing the Championship Section test will be Dutch composer Harrie Janssen (b. 1960), whose musical life began when he played trumpet in his local band. He started his professional music education aged 17 at the Academies of Music in Arnhem and Maastricht, where he studied wind orchestra conducting, theory of music, symphonic orchestra conducting and trombone. In 1984, he was appointed as Professor in Wind Orchestra Conducting and Theory of Music at the Arnhem Academy of Music.

In addition to composing and arranging, Harrie Janssen’s current activities include conducting, teaching and performing, as well as being involved in a number of recording projects. He is an internationally renowned composer and conductor for wind band and orchestra, and he has had works performed throughout the world.

The composer of the 2018 Challenge Section test-piece is Hendrik de Boer (b. 1986), who studied euphonium under Ane Travaille at the Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen from 2007-12. He plays euphonium the Fanfare Orchestra of the Corps Nationale Reserve, part of the Dutch military forces, and also works as a low brass teacher for the drum and show fanfare group, Advendo Sneek. He studied wind, fanfare and brass band conducting with Tijmen Botma and Klaas van der Woude at the same conservatory and is now the conductor of the Heerenveens Muziekcorps. He has composed and arranged for several artists and ensembles, including Femke IJlstra, Bart Schneemann, Perry Hoogendijk, Sytze Pruiksma, Robbert Vos, Ian Bousfield, Blazersensemble, Soli Brass and Brassband De Waldsang.

Speaking to British Bandsman, EBBA President Ulf Rosenberg commented: “We are delighted that Harrie Janssen and Hendrik de Boer have been chosen to write the test-pieces for the 2018 European Championships. We are looking forward to a great weekend of competitive music-making in Utrecht in 2018 and we are confident that these composers will produce fitting additions to the growing list of outstanding repertoire that the event has engendered over recent years.”
