Whitburn's new French Connection

Thursday 8 June, 2017
Whitburn Band has announced that it will be conducted at this year's British Open Championship by Paris Brass Band Musical Director Florent Didier. Making the announcement, Whitburn's President David Kinross commented: "We are delighted to have secured the services of one of the finest and most vibrant conductors in the European brass band community as we make our long-awaited return to the British Open."
2017 Grand Shield winner Whitburn will appear at the event for the first time since 2010, with this year's test-piece familiar to both band and conductor. David Kinross continued: "It was especially important for us to qualify for the Open this year as the test-piece, Fraternity by Thierry Deleruyelle, is one that we are very familiar with, having performed it at the 2016 European Championships at Lille in France. That was, of course, also a great weekend for Paris Brass Band and for Florent, so we are hopeful that our new take on the 'Auld Alliance' will pay dividends in Birmingham in September."
Florent Didier, who will be making his debut at the British Open, added: "I'm looking forward to meeting and working with the Whitburn players, who are enjoying one of their most successful spells in many years."
David Kinross concluded: "Since November we have secured the Scottish Open, Scottish Championship and Grand Shield titles under Nick Childs, who is obviously committed to Black Dyke in September. The Open is a very big challenge, but we couldn't be happier with our appointment and look forward to getting to work with Florent."
