UniBrass ready to go at Harrogate

Thursday 16 February, 2017

UniBrass 2017 is fast approaching! With the contest taking place on Saturday 18 February, final preparations are well underway across the country. The 19 competing bands are getting ready to impress an experienced adjudication panel with their creative and innovative performances. The University of Oxford Brass Band will kick off proceedings in the UniBrass Shield at 11.45am, with the UniBrass Trophy commencing at 12.15pm as reigning champion the University of Manchester attempts to defend its title.

Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Chairman Andy Straiton commented: “The seventh annual contest is bringing a major brass banding event back to Harrogate International Centre, the former national finals venue, and the local brass banding community has been out in force. Tewit Brass Band and Harrogate Brass Band have been working with the contest organising team over the past weeks, ensuring the local community are well aware that brass banding is back! Tewit’s senior youth band will also be giving a performance as part of the results ceremony.”

The nine bands competing for the UniBrass Shield will be adjudicated by Mark Wilkinson and late stand-in Leigh Baker who answered the call following the news that baritone soloist Katrina Marzella had to pull out due to the recent birth of her daughter. Ten bands will contest the UniBrass Trophy, including University of Manchester in its bid for a hat-trick of wins, with an adjudication panel of Philip Harper, Musical Director of world number one band Cory alongside Anne Crookston, current MD at Bathgate Band.

Tickets are still available for the contest and the Cory Band Gala Concert. Priced at £9.00 for the contest and £10.00 for the gala concert from the Cory Band, discounts are available for a full day ticket. These can be booked by logging on to http://unib.co.uk/tickets. Tickets will also be available on the door. For those who can’t make it, the whole event will be streamed online at http://unib.co.uk/live.
