Like bands far and wide, ensembles in the Netherlands have sorely missed getting together to perform. That all changed recently, when bands from across the country descended on Utrecht for the 2021 Netherlands Brass Band Championships.

There was delight for Soli Brass recently as it was crowned champion band of the Netherlands following a busy weekend of music making. The Leeuwarden band claimed the title after achieving 97 points, impressing with its rendition of Edward Gregson’s The World Rejoicing (Symphonic Variations on a Lutheran Chorale), a pan-European commission which received its premiere at the event following a series of COVID-enforced postponements.

Soli, which was conducted by Anne van den Berg, tasted victory during a momentous weekend of performances at the Tivolivredenberg in Utrecht on October 30, with 31 bands taking part in the 40th staging of the Netherlands’ national banding championship.
