I was born into a brass band family in Yorkshire and have the brass band movement in my blood.
I started playing the trombone when I was 6 years of age and by the age of 11 I played at the British Open on principal trombone with Carlton Main Frickley. In 1978 I became the principal trombone of the James Shepherd Versatile Brass, taking over from Derek Southcott, and continued to play with the group for over 30 years.
Whilst with Verstaile Brass I played principal trombone with the Grimthorpe Colliery Band in several spells between 1980 and 1991 and between 1991 and 2001 was a trustee of the band. I have also appeared as a guest with all of the UK's leading brass bands.
Between 1994 and 2001 I was privileged to be principal trombone of the famous Kings of Brass, appearing on all of their CD recordings and as a featured soloist on the final album, 'Down Memory Lane Volume 3'.
In my work as a freelance musician I have performed in all mediums. I am equally at home within a symphony orchestra, jazz orchestra, studio orchestra or wind ensemble. I have appeared as a guest soloist throughout the UK, Europe and Scandinavia.
I have conducted brass bands for over 20 years and I am currently musical director of the Newhall Band in Derbyshire.
